Overhead Power Lines

Overhead power lines are one of the most important part of the world’s infrastructure, so making sure they are functioning correctly, not damaged and in good health is paramount. Traditionally, operators would use people to climb up the pylons, scan from the ground or use helicopters, all of which can be expensive and dangerous. Drones have not only brought the cost down, but it also provided brilliantly clear and close images as well as made the whole process much quicker and safer.

Power lines transmit electricity at exceptionally high voltages, rendering the maintenance of these lines a hazardous undertaking. Moreover, this task demands unwavering attention and extreme caution from all parties involved. To ensure the efficient upkeep of power lines, both the pylons and insulators need to be inspected regularly, particularly for the detection of thermographic issues.

Traditionally, inspections have been conducted from the ground or by deploying helicopters. Ground-based line inspectors ascend the pylons to access the power lines, while helicopters offer a safer but significantly costlier and more intrusive alternative.

Drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), present a safer and more cost-effective substitute for traditional methods. Drones are easily deployable and are equipped with high-resolution cameras capable of capturing thermal images. Additionally, these UAVs feature transmitters that enable real-time sharing of footage, allowing operators to monitor ongoing activities precisely. Furthermore, drones possess the capability to operate within a few meters of the power lines, ensuring the capture of high-quality footage in the safest manner possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most frequent questions and answers about overhead power lines

Using drones to inspect overhead power lines is safe as long as the pilot operating the drone is fully qualified.  The drone cameras and sensors are so advanced now that you do not need to get close to the lines or tower and still get detailed images.

High quality RGB camera, thermal sensor and UV are required to get the best results.

This would depend on the pilot’s experience and the number of drones that are used at one time.  With the right drones and pilots, you can fully inspect around 50 towers per day.

We would recommend the EVO Max 4T for this type of inspection.  One of the reasons for this is that you can fly more than one drone at the same time safely.

The frequency of drone inspections depends on various factors like the age of the infrastructure, environmental conditions, and regulatory requirements. Generally, power companies conduct regular inspections, which can be up to several times a year.

Drone inspections for power lines are highly accurate and reliable, especially when using high-quality equipment and experienced operators. They provide detailed visual and thermal data, which can be more comprehensive than manual inspections.
